“Fried” Cinnamon Apples

For biscuits, hand pies, oatmeal, & more

I think that “fried apples” are supposed to be a distinctly Southern dessert here in the US, or at least that’s what Cracker Barrel has told me? (ha!) But I prefer my version. Way tastier & just about as easy as going to a restaurant and ordering is!

This is a fall staple dessert in our house (ok, camper), but honestly, served over hot biscuits, can you blame us for craving it year round?

Go ahead and multiply this recipe to make a bigger batch if ya want! It’s a loose recipe, so you can get creative. Add pumpkin pie spice instead of just cinnamon. Add more or less brown sugar. Walnuts or pecans could be delicious, too! I always want to encourage you to make my recipes your own…and then share with me what you did, so I can try your creations, too!

Ingredients:

  • 3 medium-sized apples

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • A mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, and allspice (to taste - I just sprinkle it in!)

  • 1 tbsp corn starch

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Water, as needed

Stovetop Instructions:

Step 01:

Wash & thinly slice your apples.

Step 02:

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. If you prefer browned butter - go ahead and do that now!

Step 03:

Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add apples, brown sugar, salt and spices. Stir to coat apples evenly. Place a lid on the pan and let cook for several minutes. Stir again and add just enough water to the bottom to prevent sticking (you don’t need much). Replace the lid, and allow to cook for 20-30 more minutes. Stir every 5 minutes or so.

Step 04:

Once the apples are starting to soften up, mix 1/4 water with the cornstarch, and add it to the pan. Your sauce should start to thicken now. Continue to cook this until the apples are your desired consistency. You can splash in more water to get the thickness of sauce you prefer. I like mine a little saucier, so I always add extra spices, water & cornstarch.

Crockpot Instructions:

Step 01:

Wash & thinly slice your apples.

Step 02:

Add apples & cornstarch to the crockpot. Stir to coat evenly.

Step 03:

Add spices, salt, and brown sugar to the crockpot, and stir til it’s all mixed together with the apples.

Step 04:

Add your butter, in small slices or cubes, to the top.

Step 05:

Cover the crockpot, and cook the mixture on high for about 2 hours, or until the apples are your desired tenderness. Stir it again at the end!

Spoon this deliciousness over your freshly made buttery biscuits & devour it for breakfast, brunch, dessert, or, shoot, even dinner! This is one of Taylor’s favorite desserts & I can’t say I disagree. Hope ya like it, too!
